The Design Process

Brief Overview

This research project explores the physical training aspect of an individual's well-being and focuses on understanding one's perspective and ideologies towards it. In today's fast-paced culture where time is sensitive to overwhelming work and family responsibilities, most individuals forget to prioritize and look after themselves. This research project helps re-iterating the importance of fitness in an individual's everyday life and its seamless integration of the same.

Consistent physical activity helps to maintain the physical functioning of the human body, improves mental wellbeing, and most of all reduces risks for chronic diseases. Given these widely published benefits, one would expect participation in physical activity to be the norm. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

There is a huge variety of motivation levels between people starting from the ones who lack any kind of motivation to engage in any form of physical activity and ending to the ones who exercise for their inherent interest and enjoyment of the activity itself. However, these individuals project two ends of the well-being spectrum where one benefits tremendously while the other doesn't at all.

The Umbrella Question

How might we use design thinking to promote and enhance a conscious lifestyle through physical activity for both active and inactive people?

Sub-Questions

Screen Shot 2020-03-24 at 9.29.22 PM.png

What motivates an individual to lead a healthy life?

How does the behavioral and psychological state of an active/inactive person affect its daily life?

How can the services that are provided for physical well-being be more user friendly, interactive, and effective?

Our primary research involved a deep-rooted understanding of our target audience as well as professionals associated with the fitness industry. Over a course of 2 weeks, we conducted our primary research via the following methods given below.

Subject Matter Expert Interview

For our expert interview, we focused on two major areas of health: Fitness & Nutrition.

Fitness: We spoke to  Mr. Sam Carter - Director of Fitness & Strength and has also been a conditioning coach at SCAD since 2001. He is also certified through NSCA as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Nutrition: We spoke to Miss Vijaya Nayak - who holds her Master's degree in Human Nutrition and presently working as a Nutritionist and Lifestyle Expert at Luke Coutinho Holistic Healing Systems (LCHHS).

Given below are some of the key points from the interview.

SWOT (Online Survey)

We took a survey amongst the people we know within the age range of 18 - 50 asking them basic questions on health and fitness. 113 people took the survey giving us key statistics to gauge and understand the current scenario.

The survey hence done gave us statistical data that further was categorized to understand the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the proposed problem.

Five Human Factor

The Five Human Factors method is used to understand the physical, cognitive, social, cultural, and emotional aspects of an individual in the current required scenario. This method played an important role in realizing our insights.

Data Analysis

The data points from all of the different methods of the primary research were then compiled and grouped in categories similar to their kind on yellow notes.

Framing Insights

The above data points were then grouped together to realize insights from the research and define the subject furthermore.

Research Offerings

Idea Generation & Concept Development

Brainstorming conceptual ideas based on the insights helped with constructing our ideas into 3 solid principles. These principles were also plotted against the insights in a competitive comparison format to understand which of the concepts resonate best with the research findings.

Prototype Development & Testing

In order for our prototype testing amongst users, we made a basic outline of our app and an unrendered 3D version of our workstations. We also crafted a list of open-ended questions for our prototype testing survey.

Once the prototypes and the survey questionnaires were ready, we tested them out at various locations to get a feel of what people like and don’t like about the service while also questioning the need and validation of the same.

Final Solution

The results from the prototype testing were taken into consideration and necessary changes were made to both the mobile gym station as well as the app resulting in a pragmatic and complete solution.
